Today we honor the memory of those who perished because they led authentic lives. Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR) is an annual observance on November 20 that honors the memory of transgender and gender-diverse people whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence. “Data is a testimony of how COVID-19 is disproportionately impacting trans people worldwide, especially those most marginalised, such as Black and women of colour, sex workers, migrants, youth, and poor,” they added. “As a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said TvT, “as well as growing racism and police brutality, the lives of trans and gender-diverse people are at even greater risk.” COVID-19 affects everyone but social differences and inequalities have been revealed and intensified by the pandemic, including exposing gaps in the legal and systems that could offer protection to trans and gender-diverse people. Cases from Greece, Kazakhstan, and Malawi were reported for the first time. When they are reported, cases often receive very little attention.īrazil continues to lead the list of countries with the most murders of trans and gender-diverse persons, followed by Mexico and then the United States. “Data indicate a worrying trend when it comes to the intersections of misogyny, racism, xenophobia, and hate towards sex workers,” noted TvT, “with the majority of victims being Black and migrant trans women of colour, and trans sex workers.” They also that most cases go unreported. Murders of trans people in the United States doubled from last year, the report said. Overall, this year saw a 7% increase in murders of trans and gender-diverse persons. 2021 has marked the deadliest year for trans and gender-diverse people since Transgender Europe began collecting data for its Transrespect versus Transphobia Worldwide (TvT) research project for Trans Murder Monitoring.
